Wrestling legend Randy "Macho Man" Savage dies in car crash
FLORIDA: Wrestling legend Randy "Macho Man" Savage died in hospital on Friday, from injuries he sustained after he lost control of his Jeep Wrangler and crashed it into a tree in Pinellas County.
He was 58.
Savage, whose real name is Randy Mario Poffo, is the son of wrestler Angelo Poffo and brother to Lanny "The Genius" Poffo, also a wrestler.
He is survived by his wife Barbara L Poffo, 56, who made it through the crash with minor injuries.
Police reports said the couple was wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred.
One of the most flamboyant personalities in wrestling, Savage made a name for himself in the 80s with his unique nickname Macho Man, catchphrase "Oooh, Yeah!" and over-the-top sense of style.
Often appearing in colourful cowboy hats, oversized sunglasses and gaudy sequinned robes bearing his name, Savage contributed greatly towards making the World Wrestling Federation (since renamed World Wrestling Entertainment or 'WWE') the mainstream establishment it is today.
"Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends. We wish a speedy recovery to his wife Lynn.
"Poffo will be greatly missed by WWE and his fans," said the WWE in a statement on Friday.
After the news broke about the death of the Macho Man, tributes from the wrestling fraternity began to pour in over Twitter.
"The untimely passing of Randy Savage is indeed tragic.
"All true fans of wrestling will mourn this loss. One of the all time greats," tweeted wrestler John Cena.
"I lost a close friend today. If anybody in heaven is wondering who the cat (slang for person) in the ugly cowboy hat it's Randy. Love you Bro. Never another," tweeted wrestler Kevin Nash.
